Fall Favorites | Staff Picks

Have you met our V&V team? We hope you have, but if you haven't yet had the pleasure, we are handing the mic to 3 of our staff members here on the blog today to help you get better acquainted. Learn a bit about what inspires them, the things they love in our community and their favorite V&V picks for Fall! Say Bonjour to Zoë, Audrey and Catherine...

Tell us about your picks for Fall:
"I love a jumpsuit -- all the elegance of a dress, but with the power and mobility of trousers. Plus, this one provides so many styling options! I like my shoes to be chic -- but they also have to be comfortable. You can't have one without the other! I chose a playful clutch -- I love the versatility and sophistication of the black and white color way, as well as the personality this clutch exudes. You lookin' at me?!"
What’s on your inspirational playlist at the moment?
Fishbone is forever on my inspirational playlist -- the struggle and successes of the Afropunk movement are well documented but often unexplored in contemporary culture. I love the funky, upbeat, punk infused ska and the endless energy they pack into their live performances. They know how to have fun, clearly demonstrated in their bombastic and unique sense of style, as well as their instrumental innovations and explorations. Most recently, Norwood Fisher (their bassist!) had his legendary bass guitar inducted into the Smithsonian Museum of African American History -- it doesn't get much more inspirational then that.
Who is a creative entrepreneur or artist in Durham that you greatly admire and why?
Stephanie Sevilla is a longtime friend of mine, and it's been amazing to watch her entrepreneurial endeavors blossom over the years, especially because she is, by and large, self taught and highly motivated! When we first met, she was a predominantly a make-up artist with her own business, The Makeup Culture. This business still thrives, but she has added to her skill set -- excelling at photography and even creating her own clothing and accessories line, Sevlyn. All of these accomplishments aside, she is an amazing mom, great friend, and an incredibly thoughtful and deeply humble soul. I'm proud to be her friend, and love watching her grow!

Tell us about your picks for Fall:
What would Jane Birkin wear? A retro, plaid, oversized coat, a timeless black turtle, a crop flared denim & a cross body bag. Done & done! This look is funky, unpredictable & transports you to a different generation. I'm on board.

What's on the top shelves of inspiration library right now?
My mind is still blown after recently reading Patti Smith's new rock n' roll memoir, Just Kids. The scene is NYC's historic Chelsea Hotel in the early 70s where she frequents with artistic icons, rock musicians, & beat poets. It chronicles her creative & cultural experiences there with genius photographer, Robert Maplethorpe. The fashion is insane & the old black & white photos of the pair are enough to make you swoon!

What is Durham's best kept secret?

Without question, Turtle Hole -- a dreamy little swimming hole at the end of the Eno River. Babbling brooks, rope swings, hammocks -- the kind of place you can lose yourself in a good book on a Sunday afternoon. ;)

Slowly but surely this outfit is becoming mine. Shoes, check. Pants, check. Sweater, here I come.

Where/when are you most inspired?
At work, my inspiration always seems to come from conversations with my colleagues. There is something so powerful about casually kicking around a half baked idea and then suddenly having that aha! moment just because of a simple conversation.

When someone is visiting you in Durham, where is the first place you take them?
Hands down, Pizzeria Toro. For me, it is the quintessential Durham experience. The space is casual and inviting, the service is top notch and warm, and the food is just so good.
