Black Crane is the Los Angeles-based brainchild of designers Momoko Suzuki and Alexander Yamaguchi. Momoko and Alexander set out on a mission to create a line which pulled inspiration from their Japanese heritage while providing its wearers with comfortable, simplistic ease.
Design and production are all done locally in LA, and each season's collection offers minimal, streamlined shapes with the perfect amount of edginess.
We'd say "mission accomplished," but don't just take our word for it - Momoko herself is here to tell you more!
V&V: What is the Black Crane origin story?
MOMOKO: I wanted to create something to align with my lifestyle; simple with comfort. It felt like a very natural start for me and it was really exciting as I was expanding my closet.
V&V: How do you combat creative blocks?
MOMOKO: I stick with the simple natural instinct of what I want to wear, not what I want to sell.
V&V: What’s on the top shelves of your inspiration library right now?
MOMOKO: Henri Matisse
V&V: Where do you like to look or shop for inspiration?
MOMOKO: Vintage shops, classic movies, etc…
V&V: What is the most important thing you didn’t learn in school?
MOMOKO: Technique comes later
V&V: What is the best advise you have ever received?
MOMOKO: My husband always tells me have faith in yourself. "Believing is achieving." I keep this in my mind all the time to balance myself.
V&V: How do you keep yourself organized?
MOMOKO: I plan ahead.
V&V: How do you decompress?
MOMOKO: I try to keep a balance of on and off mode.
Traveling is the best way for us to cleanse our stress.
Our final question: Fill in the blank, “When all else fails, Dream bigger.”
